PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device that avoids a limit of interleaved read in the case that the interleave read by the inter-line transfer system of, e.g. 4-field scanning is conducted and to provide a signal read method. SOLUTION: A timing signal generating section 124b of a drive signal generating section 124 of an electronic still camera is provided corresponding to each mode selected by a mode selection section (not shown) and V-drivers 14a, 14b generate a base potential respectively to specify a signal charge capacitance of a light receiving element respectively. A system control section gives a control signal in response to a mode set by a mode selection section to a mode corresponding selection section 16. The mode corresponding selection section 16 selects the V-driver 14b in outputs of V-drivers 14a, 14b. A prescribed potential supplied from the V-driver 14b to the light receiving element as a base potential is set higher. The obtained image pick up signal is amplified by a post-stage signal processing section.
