PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the error correcting device and error correcting method for BCH codes which are fast and small in circuit scale and can make byte corrections. SOLUTION: This device is equipped with a syndrome generating circuit 1 which generates a syndrome from an inputted receive word, an error position calculating circuit 2 which calculates an error position according to the generated syndrome, a delay circuit 3 which temporarily stores the receive word, and a correcting circuit 4 which corrects an error of the receive word as the output of the delay circuit according to the calculated error position. Consequently, the error position can be detected faster than an error position detecting means by a conventional chain search.
