PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fifth wheel release handle of flat-bar type. SOLUTION: This release handle comprises a fork hitch plate, a king pin engaging jaw 30, a lever 54, a release handle 58, an axially-moving lock 80, and a biased spring 66. The king pin engaging jaw 30 freely moves between a closed position where the king pin is engaged and an opening position where the king pin is disengaged. The lever 54 is coupled with the jaw 30, interlocked and displaced with an assembly to move the jaw 30 from the closed position to the opening position. The release handle 58 is mounted on the lever 54 to displace the lever 54, that is, the jaw 30 to the opening position. The axially- moving lock 80, movable between extended and contracted states, is mounted on the release handle 58 so as to prevent the release handle 58 from being moved to displace the lever 54 by engaging with the hitch plate in the extended state, and to allow the release handle 58 to be moved to displace the lever 54 in the contracted state. The biased spring 66 is positioned so as to bias the axially-moving lock 80 to an extended state.
