A process for preparing a glass-like plastic mass from at least one sweetening agent mixture by means of an extruder, in particular a double-screw extruder, comprises feeding the sweetening agent into a charging zone of the extruder, into a melting zone at elevated temperature, into a vacuum zone at reduced pressure and elevated temperature and extruding into a cooling zone at reduced temperature. The glass-like plastic mass may be further cooled on cooling conveyors. Flavourings, minerals, salts, tastes, fragrances, colourings or pharmaceutically-active additives may be fed into the plastic mass in the cooling zone. The glass-like plastic mass may be used for preparing tablets or hard caramel sweets.
