SOLUTION: This liquid crystalline (meth)acrylate compound is expressed by formula I (L1 and L2 are each H or methyl; the six-membered rings A and B are each 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene or the like; the six-membered ring C is 1,3-phenylene or the like; Y1 and Y2 are each a single bond, CH2CH2 or the like; X1 and X2 are each a single bond, O or OCO; Sp1 and Sp2 are each a 1-20C spacer group), e.g. a compound expressed by formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained, e.g. when X1 and Y2=OCO; Y1 = a single bond; X2=COO; L1=L2=L; the 6 membered rings A, B=6 membered rings A', B'; Sp1, Sp2=Sp, by heating a compound of formula III and a compound of formula IV in the presence of an acid catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid at >=230 deg.C to obtain a compound of formula V, which is condensed with an alcohol derivative using a condensing agent, a basic catalyst, etc. to form an ester derivative.
