PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject catalyst usable for polymerizing an olefin and capable of manifesting especially high responsiveness to hydrogen by using a transition metal, or the like, sticking to a specific inorganic carrier as a base. SOLUTION: This catalyst comprises an inorganic carrier containing (A) aluminum phosphate and (B) at least one inorganic oxide selected from silica and alumina and further contains a solid catalyst composition using (C) a transition metal (preferably titanium or zirconium tetrabutoxide, or the like), (D) magnesium and (E) a halogen sticking to the inorganic carrier as a base. Furthermore, the carrier contains the components A and B in (90-5):(10-95) ratio of the components A:B expressed in terms of mol% and the component A, silica and alumina in (1-85):(10-95):(1-80) ratio thereof expressed in terms of mol%. The catalyst preferably contains at least 2-100 g of the component C based on 1 kg of the catalyst.
