The cartridge filter comprises a cylindrical element sealed by embedding its ends with thermosetting coupons. The canister type, cylindrical cartridge filter (10) with at least one foil end disk (11), is manufactured by: (a) placing the end face (26) of e.g. a circular fluted paper type, filter element (16) in contact with a foil coupon (14), on a shaped end-plate (12); (b) securing the filter element so that there is no relative movement between it and the foil coupon; (c) heating the foil coupon so that it expands, essentially towards the end face and embeds the end of the filter element; and (d) terminating the heating when the foil material has hardened. Before the heating, an insert (13,15) is placed in the provided locating points (17,23) within the shaped end-plate, so that the insert becomes firmly bonded, with the cartridge, by the melt-build from the foil coupon. An Independent claim is also included for a filter cartridge, in which the foil end disk (11) is also used to embed a projecting member to aid centering the cartridge during its installation for use. The foil end disk may be a composite, and may even be a sandwich construction containing an embedded gasket. A wire mesh may be incorporated with a foil coupon to provide an additional filtration surface.
