A multilayer bearing material has a compliant layer (2) of hardness which is increased from less than that of an overlying sliding layer (4) to a higher hardness by heating. A multilayer material comprises a metal substrate (1) bearing a compliant layer (2) coated with a sliding layer (4), the compliant layer (2) consisting of an alloy having an initial hardness lower than that of the sliding layer (4) and a final HV hardness higher than that of the sliding layer (4) after heating. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) an engine bearing consisting of the above multilayer material; and (ii) production of the above multilayer material by (preferably laser or plasma) deposition of the layers and then quenching to maintain the solid solution state of the compliant layer (2). Preferred Features: The compliant layer (2) consists of Al5Zn2Mg2Cu alloy and the sliding layer (4) consists of Al20Sn0.2-5Cu alloy.
