PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for sulfurizing a sulfurized catalyst used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation, hydrodenitrification or hydrodeoxidation of a hydrocarbon feedstock and to particularly provide a method for sulfurizing a catalyst by which a sulfurized catalyst having improved catalytic properties is obtd. SOLUTION: A carried catalyst contg. at least one element selected from the group consisting of the groups IIIB, IVB and VB elements including lanthanoids and actinoids is sulfurized by contact with at least one source of elemental sulfur in an atmosphere of at least one reducing gas other than hydrogen. The reducing gas acts as a mild reducing agent and a superior distribution of a sulfurized phase is formed from the beginning of sulfurization by the presence of the reducing gas.
