PRODUCTION OF CYANOBENZOIC ACID

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals in high yield and with high purity according to a safe and industrially advantageous method without any problem about environmental pollution by reacting a cyanobenazmide compound with nitrous acid under acidic conditions. SOLUTION: A cyanobenzamide compound represented by formula I [CONH2 is located at the m-or the p-position with respect to the CN; X is Cl or F; (n) is 0-4] is reacted with nitrous acid under acidic conditions, preferably at 5-60 deg.C to thereby produce the objective compound represented by formula II.
