A ballasted guide cable (110) in which an umbilical cable (107) slides is connected to the vessel. This assembly slides in a longitudinal chute (104,114). A crane (106) with the help of a pulley (105) lifts the cable out of the chute and supports it above the water as far as possible behind the vessel. The guide cable is held by a windlass (103) so that its upstream end remains at the level of the pulley. Under the effect of the guide cable weight and the hydrodynamic forces the umbilical cable is held remote from the frame screws.
