PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of sizing paper in an acidic paper-making region of pH 4-5.5 by which an excellent size effect is manifested even if the total hardness of the water for the papermaking is high, and a dissolved electrolyte is present abundantly in the water. SOLUTION: A rosin based emulsion sizing agent obtained by dispersing a mixture of (A) a rosin ester obtained by heating and reacting (a) an alkenyl- substituted succinic acid with (b) rosins and (c) a polyhydric alcohol, with (B) a fortified rosin, or (C) a fortified rosin ester obtained by heating and reacting (a) the alkenyl-substituted succinic acid with (b) the rosins, (c) the polyhydric alcohol and (d)α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids, in water in the presence of (D) an emulsification dispersant is used in an acidic paper-making region in the method for sizing a paper.
