PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing unit that adjusts color balance in response to a state of an image at its acquisition independently of an image input device and in response to an 'apparent' image to be outputted. SOLUTION: A light source chromaticity data storage section 4 stores characteristic chromaticity data of an image acquired under a lighting light source selected among various lighting light sources. A color balance adjustment processing section 3 estimates the chromaticity of the lighting light source at the acquisition of an image from an image signal received from the image input device 1. Whether or not data of the estimated chromaticity of the lighting light source are stored in the light source chromaticity data storage section 4 is confirmed, and when stored, the color balance of the image signal is adjusted based on the estimated chromaticity of the lighting light source. Furthermore, the color balance is adjusted in matching with an 'apparent' color under an observation condition in matching with the condition of observing the image outputted from an image output device 5.
