A process for the preparation of 2-alkyl-4-oxocycloheptimidazoles and their salts, by treating a 3-methoxy-2-halocycloheptenone with alkylamidine hydrochloride. A process for the preparation of a 2-alkyl-4-oxocycloheptimidazole of formula (5) or their salts by reacting a compound (1) with an alkylamidine hydrochloride. R1 = H or lower alkyl, X = Br or Cl; and R4 = lower alkyl. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (A) Compounds (1); (B) Preparation of (1); and (C) Compounds (5) and their salts, prepared as above.
