PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyoxyalkylene monoalkyl ether hardly containing a specific alcohol compound by allowing the compound to have a specified structure and allowing a chromatogram obtained by a gel permeation chromatography and represented by a refractive index intensity and an elution time to satisfy a specific condition. SOLUTION: This polyoxyalkylene monoalkyl ether has a structure of the formula R1O(AO)nH [R1 is a 1-18C hydrocarbon; AO is a 2-4C oxyalkylene; (n) is the average number of added mols of the oxyalkylene, and 5-500], and satisfies the equation S1/S0<=0.15 [S1 is a peak area from an elution starting point A to the most rapid elution time B at which a refraction index intensity on the chromatogram becomes L/3 (L is the minimum distance between the maximum point P of the maximum refractive index intensity on the chromatogram represented by the refractive index intensity obtained by a differential refractometer and the elution time, and the base line, in a gel permeation chromatography); S0 is the peak area from the starting point A to the maximum point P]. The compound hardly contains a dihydric alcohol compound.
