PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate formation of the stabilizing part by oxidizing a magneto- resistance effect film, whereas the stabilizing part is formed at one end of the film to stabilize it magnetically. SOLUTION: An MR head element 6 is held between a first and a second soft magnetic film 4, 8 through a second and a third insulating film 5, 7. This MR head element 6 is equipped with a planar and nearly rectangular MR element 10 which is arranged nearly parallelly in the longitudinal direction to the face oppositely facing a magnetic recording medium, a stabilizing part 11a, 11b formed at both ends in the longitudinal direction of the MR element 10, and a required drawing conductors 12a, 12b. This stabilizing parts 11a, 11b possesses a coercive force and residual magnetization larger than those of the MR element 10, fixing the magnetizing direction of the MR element 10 by the influence of the magnetic field from the stabilizing parts 11a, 11b, and stabilizing the MR element 10 in a state of a single magnetic domain. Then, the stabilizing parts 11a, 11b are formed on both sides of the MR element 10 by oxidizing both ends of the MR element 10.
