A continuous casting installation comprising a mould 1, secondary cooling device and guides 3, extractor rolls 4, severing device 5 and clamps 6, has a carriage 7 into which starter bars 9 are lowered, and a carriage 10 into which ingots 12 severed from the cast strand 2 are lowered by the clamps 6. The carriage 10 stores the severed ingots 12 vertically until required for use when they are then turned to a horizontal position by lowering pivoted side walls of compartments 11 in the carriage 10. The carriages 7, 10 have moving means 13, 14 for advancing them beneath the strand 2. The carriage 10 may have two rows of compartments 11, and parallel adjacent tracks for the carriage may be provided by which means each row may be aligned with the strand 2. |
