PURPOSE: A freshness preservative absorbs ethylene gas generated by organisms, inhibits growth of organisms and converts the ethylene gas to carbon dioxide and water, thereby maintaining freshness of fruits, vegetables, meats and fishes as well as taste and nutrient. CONSTITUTION: The freshness preservative comprises sepiolite, potassium permanganate, smectite, tourmaline and citric acid. The preservative is prepared by a method comprising the steps of: mixing 10 g of smectite and 10 g of tourmaline in an agitator to be less than 100 mesh; saturating 59 g of granular potassium permanganate and 10 g of aqueous solution of antibacterial ceramics with 940 g of sepiolite having a particular size of 2 to 4 millimeters at a temperature not greater than 250°C; drying the mixture to remove the sepiolite of moisture at a temperature between 20°C and 150°C for less than 6 hours; and adding 10 g of citric acid.
