PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new azoamide compound highly soluble in various polar solvents, capable of efficiently introducing hydroxyl groups onto polymer terminals, and useful as e.g. a polymerization initiator. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by formula I (R1 and R2 are each a lower alkyl or the like; R3 is a lower alkyl; X is a lower alkylene), e.g. 2,2'-azobis[N-(butanol-2-yl)-2-methylpropionamide]. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of an azodicarboxylic diester compound of formula II (R4 is a lower alkyl) [e.g. dimethyl 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionate)] with pref. 2-5 molar timer, based on the compound of formula II, of an amino alcohol of formula III (e.g. 3-amino-4-methylpentanol) in a solvent or in the absence of any solvent, pref. in the presence of 0.1-0.5 equivalent of an alkaline organometallic compound (e.g. sodium methoxide) at a temp. of 0-40 deg.C for 1-24 h.
