PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a group of matter to be packed on a packaging machine simply at a low operation cost and an operation speed. SOLUTION: These are a unit 5 and a method of forming a group 3 of matter 2 to be packed on a packaging machine 1, and the continuous matter 2 to be packed is forwarded to the inlet 17 of a screw device 12 of the group of matter to be packed by means of a continuous feeding conveyer 19; herein, feeding device 27, 29 disposed at the outlet 18 of the screw device 12 and operating step by step are controlled by a sensor 32 for detecting the length of the group of matter to be packed, so that the complete group 3 of matter to be packed is transferred to the packaging unit 6 of the packaging machine 1.
