PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal continuously variable transmission with a simple structure capable of properly meeting the reversing operation of a variator. SOLUTION: This toroidal continuously variable transmission comprises a toroidal variator, a forward and backward movement switching mechanism 4 disposed in the power output side of the variator, a transmission control mechanism 29 for controlling the variator to convert the speed ratio of an input rotation and an output rotation and a detecting sensor 36 for detecting the normally rotating operation and the reversely rotating operation of the variator. The transmission control mechanism 29 controls the variator in accordance with a signal inputted from a first control valve 32a corresponding to the normally rotating operation of the variator based on a signal detected by the detecting sensor 36 and controls the variator in accordance with a signal inputted from a second control valve 32b corresponding to the reversely rotating operation.
