PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of image data by uniformly lighting a scanning area by providing a 1st reflecting surface, which has a 1st plane arranged almost in parallel to a scanned surface adjacent to plural light sources and directs some of light beams to the scanning area and a 2nd reflecting surface, which has a 2nd plane which is not parallel to the scanned surface and directs some of light beams to the scanning area. SOLUTION: When a surface as the contact surface of the scanner is arranged on a document and scanning operation is started, a light source 44 emits light beams over a considerably wide range of angles. A 1st reflecting device 46 reflects some of the light beams 50' emitted by the light source 44 to a scanning area 42, and a 2nd reflecting device 48 reflects some of other light beams 50" to the scanning area 42. Furthermore, other light beams 50 emitted by the light source 44 are made incident directly on the scanning area 42, and light beams traveling along different paths illuminate the scanning area 42, and thereby the lighting to the scanning area 42 by the lighting through the plural paths is increased.
