A spherical compressed gas storage vessel 1 rests on a yielding bearing surface comprising of central hollow bed 2 of low yieldability, e.g. bitumen-bonded granular material, reinforced by annular rings 8 and of diameter d 1 of 0À1 to 0À4 of the external diameter D of the vessel and an adjacent annular bed 3 of unbonded granular material, e.g. sand, having a high yieldability and with an external diameter d 2 of 0À25 to 0À7 of the diameter D. Beds 2, 3 are themselves supported by a gravel bed 4 retained by a wall 5 built into the ground 6. During pressure testing with water, that portion of the vessel bearing on bed 3 is allowed to deform whilst the lowest region of the vessel remains undeformed. The bed 2 may be of concrete. |
