摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and efficiently produce tetrachloro-o-phthalonitrale useful as a raw material for a medicine, agrochemicals, etc., by suppressing a self- condensation of the raw material therefor. SOLUTION: This tetrachloro-o-phthalonitrile is produced by, for example, reacting a vapor of o-phthalonitrile (a raw material) with chlorine gas in a gas phase using a catalyst such as an activated carbon. The raw material having the total contents of Fe, Ni, etc., reduced to <=1,000ppm and the content of water reduced to <=50ppm in the raw material are supplied to the reaction. A melting vessel and an evaporator is installed in a feed system and a glass, which is a non-metallic material, is preferably used as an interior material of apparatuses, which is brought into contact with the raw material, in the feed system. The water existing in the raw material or an inert gas causes a condensation reaction of the raw material and formation of a self- condensate such as a linear polymer of formula I [(n) is 2-8], linear trimer of formula II and phthalocyanine derivative, etc., formed as a by-product. Further, the amount of the used chlorine gas is regulated so as to be 1-2 times of the theoretical amount and the reaction is performed within the range of 280-450 deg.C. The temperatures of the melting vessel and the evaporator are each preferably 139-300 deg.C. The compound of formula II is a new one.
