The invention concerns a method which consists in physically representing the reference direction by means of a measuring system comprising at least one axis and in orienting the measuring system axis along the reference direction; then transporting the measuring system in the proximity of the object to be positioned; recording the measuring system axis possible variation of orientation while it is being the transported; measuring the angular difference between the measuring system axis and the axis direction of the object to be positioned, and modifying the position of the object to reduce, optionally cancel the total measured angular difference. When an object with horizontal axis is being positioned, such as a steel production processing line roller, a gyroscopic unit is used comprising two optical gyroscopes, one of which is an optical fibre gyroscope with a particular configuration.
