New organometallic complexes are very stable, water soluble and do not form toxic byproducts on degradation. New organometallic complexes comprises heterocyclic carbenes conforming to the general formula (I) :- ((Z<+>X<->)mMLn)Y (I) Z<+> = a 1,2,4-triazolium-5-ylidine ion of which some of the ring atoms are substituted by hydrocarbyl radicals; L = a mineral or neutral ligand; M = a metal from groups 1b, 2b, 3b, 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b or 8; X<-> = a mineral or organic anion; m = 1 - 6; n = 0 - 5 ; m + n = 6 or less; Y = an anion or cation such that the complex is electrically neutral. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of the complexes.
