The invention relates to a device for detecting the phase and amplitude of electromagnetic waves. The device comprises at least two modulation photo gates (1, 2) which are sensitive to the electromagnetic waves. The device also comprises accumulation gates (4, 5) which are assigned to said modulation photo gates and which are not photosensitive, and has electric connections for the modulation photo gates (1, 2) and for the accumulation gates (4, 5) such that the latter can be connected to a readout device and the previous can be connected to a modulating device. Said modulating device increases and decreases the potential of the modulation photo gates (1, 2) in relation to one another and in relation to the preferably constant potential of the accumulation gates (4, 5) corresponding to a desired modulation function. The invention provides that a plurality of modulation photo gates (1, 2) and accumulation gates (4, 5) are provided in the shape of long and narrow, parallel strips which form a PMD pixel in groups.
