A method for defining the shape of a pulse function for acting on a data stream for transmission in a telecommunication system in accordance with a predetermined modulation scheme (e.g. MSK, QPSK) is described. The method comprises defining desired cost parameters (e.g. error functions for amplitude, BER, bandwidth, energy, AFC) and defining the amplitude of the pulse function over a range of frequencies in dependence on the desired cost parameters. A dual mode TDMA/CDMA radiotelephone is described having a pulse function generator for shaping the data stream with a pulse function whose shape is dependent on the mode of operation. Pulse functions for the different requirements of data and voice are stored in different look-up tables which are selectable according to the application required.
