The lead cable winder has a manual winding knob (6) which is rotated relative to the appliance housing for winding the lead cable onto or from a cable reserve (7) provided around the outside of the manual winding knob. Retaining slits may be used for securing the lead cable, with easy release by flexure of the winding knob when gripped.
