Purification of thiophene

The purification of thiophene contaminated by mercaptans is carried out by selectively oxidizing the mercaptans in polysulfides by sulfur in presence of a basic catalyst or preferably a basic solid catalyst. A basic liquid catalyst at a ratio of 0.1-10 wt.% or 0.5-15 wt.% with respect to the weight of thiophene to be purified is used. The treated thiophene is then distilled.
