PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially and advantageously producing high purity 1-[(2-methyl-2-propenyl)oxy]-4-nitrobenzene according to simple operations. SOLUTION: A methallyl halide represented by the formula (X denotes a halogen atom) is reacted with p-nitrophenol in the presence of a base. An alkali metal hydride such as sodium hydride or potassium hydride, an alkali metal hydroxide such as sodium hyroxide, potassium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide, an alkali metal alcoholate such as sodium methoxide or sodium ethoxide, an alkali metal carbonate such as sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate, an alkali metal bicarbonate such as sodium hydrogencarbonate or potassium hydrogencarbonate, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide such as calcium hydroxide or barium hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal carbonate such as calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate, etc., are cited as the base. One or more of the bases can be suitably be combined for use. The amount of the bases used is within the range of preferably l-5 mol, more preferably 1-1.5 mol based on 1 mol p-nitrophenol.
