The device has a stepped piston-shaped pin acted upon by a hydraulic medium from a high pressure pump (12) controlled by at least one hydraulic valve . The pin (21) opens the gas changeover valve (1) and has an end position damper which acts as the valve is closed. The narrow end of the pin penetrates into a matching end section of the cylinder at the end of the closure motion and has a hollow chamber (21e) which can be filled with hydraulic medium via a ball non-return valve (12). Jet bores (21f) which open in the contact region of the valve ball (24a) lead to the end of the larger cross-section pin section remote from the gas changeover valve. The piston-cylinder unit has an electrical annular coil for pin position detection by induction.
