PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a diabetes diagnostic effective even if intended for patients with light diabetes, slight in burden on subjects, and instantaneously affording an accurate test result, by including a specific fatty acid. SOLUTION: This diagnostic is obtained by including a fatty acid with at least one carbon atom on specific site labeled with<13> C; wherein the fatty acid is pref. acetic acid, octanoic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid. The test using this diagnostic is such an exhalation test that a subject is administered with this diagnostic either singly or continually, and an increment in the<13> C concentration of exhaled CO2 after the administration is determined. Specifically, the<13> C concentration of the exhaled CO2 following administration is measured, and the aimed diagnosis of diabetes is conducted on the basis of data such as the increment in the<13> C concentration of exhaled CO2 [Δ<13> (%)] after the lapse of a given time following the administration (e.g. 5 min, 10 min, 15 min).
