A device for supporting and guiding overhanging bar stock in automatic lathes comprises a supporting means for a number of leafsprings of an inverted #-shape, the arms of which are bent backwardly along arcs of circles away from the opening of the #, the springs being mounted by their ends so that the centre circular portion of the springs which supports the bar stock may yield in all radial directions. A protecting tube 4, Fig. 1, for the stock 15 is carried in the usual manner by a bracket on the lathe and a pedestal 6, and is provided with a slot 7 through which a gravity feed pusher 8 operates. Fixing blocks 11 secured to the lower inside surface of the tube 4 are provided at intervals along its length to support a pair of symmetrically-arranged rods 13, Fig. 2. A series of flat or leaf-springs 14 having the inside formation of an inverted # are supported by their extended ends engaging the rods 13. The springs may be closely adjacent or spaced apart as in Fig. 1 by distancesleeves on the rods 13. The stock 15 is flexibly supported within the tubular cavity formed by the springs which arrangement is stated to reduce noise. In a modification, springs, or rubber, or leather cord, may be arranged between the inner and outer leaves of the springs 14 symmetrically disposed along the length of the supporting tube at the level of the centre of the circular centre portion. |
