PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bacterial topoisomerase Ill polypeptide useful as e.g. an alternative to antibiotics in the protection from Streptococcus wound infection and dental therapies, and to obtain a polynucleotide encoding the above polypeptide. SOLUTION: This polypeptide has an amino acid sequence >=70% identical with the 1 to 147 amino acids of an amino acid sequence of the formula, and the other objective polynucleotide includes a nucleotide sequence >=70% identical with a polynucleotide encoding the above polypeptide or nucleotide sequence complementary to the above sequence (the above polynucleotide can also include a fragment having at least 15 consecutive bases among the above sequences). The polypeptide of the present invention can be produced recombinantly from the polynucleotide of the other present invention found in a DNA library derived from Streptococcus pneumoniae 0100993 and afforded by the standard cloning and screening technique.
