The invention concerns a method for depositing a mechanical protective varnish coat on a smart card (14) comprising a cavity designed to receive a module including a microcircuit, characterised in that it consists in spraying varnish by means of a spray gun (10, 12) supplied with varnish under pressure and with air under pressure while the smart card (14) and the spray gun(s) (10, 12) are moved relatively to each other. The invention also concerns an installation comprising a loading station wherein the smart cards (20) are placed on a support (24), a varnishing station including at least a spray gun, a station for drying and/or cross-linking the varnish and an unloading station wherein the smart cards are removed from their support and stacked.
