The procedure enables determination of time advance information in a cellular radio communication system. A mobile station interrupts (1) its communication with a first base station, on a current channel, in order to send a synchronisation signal sequence (2) to a second base station on a first target channel. This allows the second base station to calculate time advance information associated with the mobile station w.r.t. the second base station. The mobile station then re-establishes (3) its communication on the current channel. The time advance information calculated by the second base station is transmitted (5,6) via at least one controller to the mobile station. The first target channel is a common access channel co-operating with a number of mobile stations. |
