The device generates images of an object (2) under examination using imaging circuitry (12). Image information from a detector is fed to the imaging circuitry. The device has sensors (15) for detecting patient and/or object movement. The output signals of the sensors (15) are fed to the imaging circuitry for image correction on movement. Magnet elements (13) generate magnetic fields which are detected by sensors on the patient table or bed. The magnet elements are used with a sensor at the tip of a catheter to detect the position of the catheter tip. An intervention instrument or the image acquisition unit is arranged to be freely adjustable in space. Information on the position of the instrument is provided. The alignment of the instrument is then determined by comparing this information with that from the sensors.
