PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a component character collation and inspection method and a component character collation and inspection device capable of registering a master pattern without taking the labor and time. SOLUTION: For continuously transferred components to be inspected, normal/ defective condition judgement is performed by reading the pattern of characters printed on the component to be inspected and collating the read pattern with master pattern data corresponding to the characters for collation. In the case of defective judgement, the pattern read in a previous time and the pattern read this time are collated, the number of times that the collated result of the pattern read in the previous time and the pattern read this time is the same is counted and compared with the number of times of continuation set beforehand, and in the case that the number of times of the continuation reaches more than the prescribed number of times, the master pattern is changed to the pattern read at present and registered. Thus, the master pattern can be automatically updated and registered.
