A novel base section (1) for a foundation structure, has a generally flat, box-shaped outline and comprises a light concrete material. It has a horizontal underside, two vertical outer sidewalls (3, 4), a top wall (5) running parallel to the underside, a sloping surface (6), and two end walls (7). One sidewall (3) is wider than the other (2). The top surface extends from the top edge of this sidewall (3), over about two thirds the width of the underside. The top and side (4) walls are connected by the sloping surface, which acts as a run-off wall. Also claimed is a foundation. It includes a horizontal, insulating slab base. Rows of base sections as described are laid and filled with intervening cast light concrete, forming a continuous, load-bearing highly-insulating layer. Preferably the hardened light concrete has a bulk density of 200-800 kg/m<3> with a compressive strength of 30-120 t/m<2>. It contains polystyrene granules. The sloping surface is inclined at 20-50 deg with respect to the underside, and there are two parallel grooves (8a, 8b) in the top surface, running along its length, equally spaced about the top centreline. These form rectangular recesses a third to a fifth the height of the base section. One groove is next to the side wall (3) and is spaced about one groove width from it. A second groove (8b) lies adjacent to the common edge formed by the top and sloping surfaces, being about one groove width from it. The grooves have equal width, about one sixth the entire width of the top surface. In one end wall of the section, there are vertical grooves, in the other, corresponding vertical tongues. The tongues and grooves have corresponding dovetail sections.
