The bar code system uses a plaque with at least a transparent zone (2) and at least a non-transparent coloured zone (3). The plaque (1) has a bar code identification, spread over the opaque coloured zone (3) and the transparent zone (2), on the external face (8). The hammer (4), for applying the plaque (1) to the wood, is of a white colour and the plaque is clipped to the hammer (4) before it is attached to the wood (11). The bar code reader (30) reads the code against the white background of the hammer via the transparent zone (2).
