An automatic transmission for a vehicle is improved by including torque control for the engine. The processor control for the transmission controls the torque converter and/or the automatic gearbox. The control also generates a target torque value for the engine and this is fed to the engine management system for optimum engine settings. The transmission control and the engine control have programmed operating fields which include the gear change steps. The engine torque/speed is controlled during gear change for optimum driving comfort.
