An emulsion polymer is disclosed by the present invention. In particular, the emulsion polymer comprises a protective colloid and a functionalized silane component which is of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R'' is C1-C5 alkyl, R' is C1-C5 alkyl, R is SH, CH2=CH-, CH2=C(CH3)-C(O)O-, CH2=CH-C(O)O-, and <IMAGE> n is 1-10, and m is 2 or 3.
