PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of coupling between a semiconductor laser and an optical fiber and to reduce variance in coupling efficiency due to an error in the fitting of the semiconductor laser. SOLUTION: In order that laser light which is made incident on an end surface 5 of a core with a refractive index n1 travels along the optical axis of the core 4, the projection point of the semiconductor laser 1 is arranged at a distance r1 from the optical axis 7 of the optical fiber 3 with relation 0.6fsinθ2 <r1 <fsinθ2 on the basis of the Snell's law, provided thatθ2 =sin<-1> (n1 sinϕ)-ϕ, whereθ2 is the angle between the optical axis 6 of projection light from a coupling lens 2 with focal length (f) and the optical axis 7 of the optical fiber 3.
