PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the service life of a cutting tool even under severe cutting conditions by forming an alumina layer in which orientation properties by microregion X-ray diffraction satisfy specified conditions on the surface of a WC base super alloy or Ti-Cn base cermet substrate. SOLUTION: The orientation properties by microregion X-ray diffraction of an alumina layer satisfy the inequality, where Inα2.085 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case plane distance (d) by JCPDSNo. 10.173 in alumina in the nose of the flank of a cutting tool = 2.085, Inα1.601 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case (d)=1.601, Inκ2.79 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case the plane distance (d) by JCPDSNo. 4.0878=2.79, Inκ1.43 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case the plane distance (d)=1.43, Icα2.085 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case the plane distance (d) by JCPDSNo. 10.173 in alumina in the central part of the flank of the cutting tool = 2.085, Icα1.601 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case (d)=1.601, Icκ2.79 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case the plane distance (d) by JCPDSNo. 4.0878=2.79, and Icκ1.43 ; the X-ray diffraction intensity in the case the plane distance (d)=1.43.
