PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject new compound useful as a material for constituting an optoelectronics-relating element such as display, recording element, light valve and projector. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by the formula (R is an alkyl or an alkoxy; A and B are each pyrimidine, phenyl or pyridine group; Y is single bond or an ester bond; X is cyano or trifluoromethyl; (n) is 2-18), e.g.α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-ω-[4-(5-octylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenyl-4'-oxy]undecane. The compound of the formula wherein A is pyrimidine group, B is phenyl, Y is single bond and X is CN can be produced by alkylating 4-cyano-4'- hydroxybiphenyl with a halogenated alcohol and reacting with a 5-alkyl-2-(4- hydroxyphenyl)pyrimidine.
