PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing method high in floating stability, small in adsorption of a head and high in CSS(contact, start and stop) durability, even when a floating amt. of the head is small. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording and reproducing method for performing recording and reproducing by rotating a magnetic disk and floating a magnetic head above this magnetic disk, the magnetic disk has a magnetic thin film on a glass substrate, and the surface roughness Rmax of this glass substrate is 40-80A, whole the surface roughness Rmax on the magnetic thin film side of the magnetic disk is 80-150A. Then, the floating amt. of the magnetic head is <=0.2μm, and the Rmax of the front surface of the magnetic head is <=200A.
