Synthesis of alkyl tert-alkyl ethersusing clay catalysts

Methyl tert-butyl ether is prepared from tertiary-butyl alcohol and methanol in one step by reaction of the TBA and methanol in the presence of a catalyst comprising a fluorosulfonic-acid modified montmorillonite clay at elevated temperature and moderate pressure.
