The constituent powder mix (1) is delivered to a receiving hopper (2) at the upstream end of the continuous tile manufacturing plant. The powder is discharged at a controlled rate onto a belt conveyor (3) and levelled to a predetermined thickness by a dosing squeegee (2a). A decorative granule layer (10) may be added and the strip of powder (6) advances through the pre-pressing station comprising the conveyor end roller (12) and a spaced pressing roller (13). The compressed layer (14) is sufficiently stable to be pushed by the rollers across a transfer table (15) to the tile mould (4) where successive tile portions are severed and pressed by a punch (18) in the mould cavity (19).
