<p>The inner face of the ampoule is coated with luminescent material which glows under the influence of the radiation from the gas filling. The material used for the ampoule walls and the dimensions are such that they are transparent to the wavelength of the emitted light but act as shields for the radiation which cannot. therefore, escape. The volume of gas contained may be reduced by an internal solid pillar protruding from the base of the ampoule and the luminescent layer may be deposited on this. The gas may be compressed and may be diluted with an inert carrier gas. The ampoule and pillar are of glass.</p> |
